Nancy Penrose serves as the communications coordinator for the OOI Regional Scale Nodes and has been with the program since 1999. She has been a technical editor and writer in industry and academe, including having served as the head of the Publications Department at the UW Applied Physics Laboratory. In 2009, she produced a short video, "Dance of the Dumbo Octopus," which was screened in the Smithsonian Sant Hall of the Ocean. She is a writer of creative nonfiction and won the Silver Award, Solas Awards for Best Travel Writing 2007, and was named Grand Prize winner in the Summer 2008 issue of the literary magazine Memoir (and). She is co-author, with Khoo Seow Hwa, of Behind the Brushstrokes: Appreciating Chinese Calligraphy, a book published by ASIA 2000. Further details about her writing may be found here.
